Weekend Box Office: Sodium Intake High, but Dreams Still More Captivating

Angelina Jolie still has some box office clout as tough girl agent Salt managed a solid $36.5 million second-place opening. The buzz over Inception hasn't died down as the mind-bending drama held on to its #1 spot with a $43.5 million take. The Christopher Nolan film has grossed $143.6 million since opening and dropped only 31 percent from its strong opening weekend.

Despite getting good reviews from critics and audiences, the family-friendly Ramona and Beezus could only scrape up $8 million for a sixth place showing. Families seem to still be in an animated state of mind as Despicable Me took in another $26.4 pushing it over $161 million while Toy Story 3 continued its Pixar-shattering record by pulling in $9 million and landing near $380 million total.

Sorcerer's Apprentice managed to hold on to a good chunk of its audience, but the 4th place showing of just under $10 million, the film's total of $42.6 million isn't showing blockbuster status. Adam Sandler's grownups is nearing $150 million bringing in another $7.6 million while Twilight: New Moon took 8th place with $7 million. It should pass $280 million soon.

The late push is helping, with total sales up 11 percent compared to last year. Despite a bumpy start, total sales for the year are up 3 percent although factoring in higher prices, actual attendance has dipped by 3.4 percent.

I have a feeling that if 3D sales were taken out, both ticket sales would probably be behind last year, especially as Avatar bled into 2010 and films like Alice in Wonderland, How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek 4 and Clash of the Titans had hefty 3D sales. I had this discussion just the other day that aside from Avatar, 3D has done nothing good for film.

Ticket sales are only up becuase of the 3D ticket sales. What about actual volume of tickets? This has to be lower, with all of these really crappy movies that have come out.
